In 2024, approx. 38K tons of copper tubes, pipes and fitting were imported in Africa; shrinking by -2.7% on 2023 figures. In general, imports showed a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 11%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at 45K tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2024, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, copper pipe and fitting imports dropped slightly to $393M in 2024. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. Egypt (10K tons), Algeria (8K tons) and South Africa (5.5K tons) represented roughly 62% of total imports in 2024. Morocco (2.6K tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Nigeria (2.2K tons). All these countries together took near 13% share of total imports. The following importers - Senegal (1.1K tons) and Tunisia (1.1K tons) - each finished at a 6% share of total imports.

In value terms, the largest copper pipe and fitting importing markets in Africa were Egypt ($123M), Algeria ($83M) and South Africa ($61M), with a combined 68% share of total imports. Morocco, Tunisia, Nigeria and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.
Nigeria, with a CAGR of +14.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Tubes and pipes of refined copper represented the largest type of copper tubes, pipes and fitting in Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at 24K tons, which was approx. 58% of total imports in 2024. Tube or pipe fittings, couplings, elbows, sleeves of copper alloys (9.8K tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 24% share, followed by tubes and pipes of copper alloys other than copper-zinc, cupro-nickel or nickel-silver (8.5%) and tube or pipe fittings, couplings, elbows, sleeves of refined copper (6.5%). Tubes and pipes of copper-zinc base alloys (brass) (958 tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Tubes and pipes of refined copper was also the fastest-growing in terms of imports, with a CAGR of +2.0% from 2013 to 2024. Tube or pipe fittings, couplings, elbows, sleeves of refined copper experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. tube or pipe fittings, couplings, elbows, sleeves of copper alloys (-1.1%), tubes and pipes of copper-zinc base alloys (brass) (-1.7%) and tubes and pipes of copper alloys other than copper-zinc, cupro-nickel or nickel-silver (-9.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of tubes and pipes of refined copper (+16 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2013-2024, the share of tubes and pipes of copper alloys other than copper-zinc, cupro-nickel or nickel-silver (-15.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other products remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, tubes and pipes of refined copper ($226M) constitutes the largest type of copper tubes, pipes and fitting imported in Africa, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by tube or pipe fittings, couplings, elbows, sleeves of copper alloys ($97M), with a 25% share of total imports. It was followed by tubes and pipes of copper alloys other than copper-zinc, cupro-nickel or nickel-silver, with a 9% share.
For tubes and pipes of refined copper, imports increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2013-2024. With regard to the other imported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: tube or pipe fittings, couplings, elbows, sleeves of copper alloys (-0.5% per year) and tubes and pipes of copper alloys other than copper-zinc, cupro-nickel or nickel-silver (-6.9% per year).
The import price in Africa stood at $10,344 per ton in 2024, growing by 2.4% against the previous year. Over the last eleven years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $10,603 per ton in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major imported products. In 2024, major imported products recorded the following prices: in tubes and pipes of copper-nickel base alloys (cupro-nickel) or copper-nickel-zinc base alloys (nickel silver) ($11,876 per ton) and tubes and pipes of copper alloys other than copper-zinc, cupro-nickel or nickel-silver ($10,239 per ton), while the price for tube or pipe fittings, couplings, elbows, sleeves of refined copper ($9,379 per ton) and tubes and pipes of refined copper ($9,559 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by tubes and pipes of copper alloys other than copper-zinc, cupro-nickel or nickel-silver (+3.3%), while the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2024, the import price in Africa amounted to $10,344 per ton, surging by 2.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2024, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 27% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $10,603 per ton in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 14%. The volume of export peaked at 8.5K tons in 2023, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, copper pipe and fitting exports shrank modestly to $83M in 2024.
